Justice Tafazzal Hossain Khan, widely known as T. H. Khan, was a prominent figure in the legal and political landscape of Bangladesh. Born on October 21, 1920, in Haluaghat, Mymensingh, he passed away on January 16, 2022, at the age of 101 due to old-age complications.
Early Life and Education:
T. H. Khan completed his graduation and post-graduation in law from Dhaka University in 1947. This marked the beginning of his long and distinguished career in the legal profession.
Legal Career:
He embarked on his legal practice in 1947 and joined the then East Pakistan High Court as a judge in 1968. However, he opted for early retirement in 1973 to return to legal practice. His expertise and standing in the legal community led to his election as the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association on two occasions, in 1974 and 1979. He was a highly respected veteran of the Supreme Court.
Political Career:
Beyond his legal career, T. H. Khan was a significant figure in Bangladeshi politics. He was a founding member and the vice-chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). In the 1979 parliamentary elections, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Mymensingh-1 constituency representing the BNP. He also served in the cabinet of President Ziaur Rahman.
Contributions and Legacy:
Justice T. H. Khan was a respected figure in both the legal and political spheres. He was also the founding president of the BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum (Nationalist Lawyers' Forum). His long career witnessed significant periods in the history of Bangladesh's legal and political development. His passing was mourned by the legal fraternity and political circles alike, with the Supreme Court even suspending judicial activities as a mark of respect. He is remembered as a veteran jurist and a significant political figure.
He is survived by three sons and one daughter. His eldest son, Afzal H. Khan, is also a senior lawyer and was also elected to parliament.
